The next sub-24 trip will address the east-west imbalance you find on our 'Destinations' page! Nuuksio, Pirttimäki, Luukki, etc. are excellent places, but we wouldn't want to neglect the beauty of the eastern side of our great conurbation.
After meeting at Wanha Pehtoorin Kioski in Haltiala next to the river Vantaa in northern Helsinki, we will roughly follow the Kerava river up to the Kuusijärvi/Sipoonkorpi area and then find somewhere nice to eat, sleep and be merry. The ride will be around 15 km from Haltiala and I should point out that making your way to the meeting point should involve nice parts of Central Park and Paloheinä, so it will be a nice ride from start to finish!
Once in Kuusijärvi we have the possibility to take a sauna, so bring your sauna gear if you feel like a dip in the lake!
Meeting point at the kiosk, 17:30.
Check the map below for the meeting point:

I will be coming from Leppävaara, so I can meet any westerners there around 16:45, if you feel like it. I'm also planning to ride home that same evening, so I would be happy for company if someone else has a tight Saturday morning schedule.

Back on bikes
Winter coming to an end (who said finally?), Sub24 switched from skis to bikes on the last outing. Seven commited cyclists braving the light drizzle and rather chilly winds found themselves in the regular meeting point in Bemböle, heading west on the familiar road of Nupurintie.
Let's go! Olivier taking the lead from Bemböle.
Jorge all thumbs up on his custom made road bike
Riders ready for wet conditions
Once in Veikkola, a straight turn northbound under the sun would make a great occasion for a group picture. Passing by a few lakes (still frozen), quickly after entering Vihti municipality we reached the old farm of Stenbacka, 20 kilometers from Bemböle. For those coming from Helsinki, it was no less than 4 municipalities crossed by the brave two wheelers, a (modest) record for Sub24: Helsinki, Espoo, Kirkkonummi, Vihti.
Happy faces under the sun
Arrival at the farm, featuring Robin's beautiful Raleigh
After some candies offered by Lee upon arrival, Olivier and Lee would quickly warm the sauna where the seven of us would soon be sitting. A great stove and roaring fire would make for a great löyly, and the conveniently located stream behind would refresh the cooking bodies rather nicely.
The detached wooden sauna
Gentle rapids fueled by the melting snow
Is there any better feeling than a dip in the icy waters after a hot sauna?
Taking away the winter fur. Temperature below 2°C.
After nearly 2 hours of this treatment we all continued the evening inside the cottage for dinner and a comfortable gathering by the fire. The tradition of luxury items well respected would see a display of real treats: kangaroo jerky from Australia, Swiss fondue, chestnut cream, chocolate cake... The most attentive people might even have seen a bottle of Jallu turning around at some point...
A relaxing Friday nigtht
Under the candle light...
A bit after midnight we called it a night and slowly made it to our sleeping bags. A refreshing couple of hours later, breakfast, light cleaning and packing, came the time to take the decision of the road back to the Finnish capital. Instead on going back the same way we came yesterday, we agreed on following Kurjolammentie across Nuuksio National Park to reach Kattila, and ultimately Nuuksiontie, along Pitkäjärvi, a familiar road for regular Sub24ers. Jorge's thin tires would cope very well on the wet gravel roads, despite the good amount of snow left here and there.
Soon ready to hit the road!
Somewhere in the heart of Nuuksio. Few remains of the past winter left.
Fancy a swim?
Young, wild, and free!
Enjoying the ride on the new cycling track from Solvalla
Few kilometers more and Bemböle would be in sight. All in all, a great start of the cycling-camping season, in full comfort, warming up for the joys of summer still ahead.

The Last Friday
This beautiful spring weather is quite inspiring! I'm sure you've all pumped up your tyres and oiled your chains ready for the long, dry summer ahead. Looking back on the winter, the sub-24 faithful have had some epic trips and kept the heart of the overnighter beating fiercely.
But the ski is dead. Long live the bike.
You may have thought that sub-24 Friday passed without note last weekend. Well, you'd be wrong. The reason is... sub-24 Friday has moved...
Sub-24 Friday is now the LAST FRIDAY of the month.
This will ensure good weather.
So, our next trip will be on Friday 26th April. And, somewhat surprisingly, the trip is already planned... We so thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Stenbacka last November, we're going there again to open the sub-24 bicycling season. Around a 15 km ride from Bemböle, sauna, a dip in the stream, followed by a warm, dry night in a very comfortable old house owned by the mysterious Espoon Retkeilijät.
If you want to wash away your winter fur, what better way that sub-24?! Just don't forget your towel, slippers and 15e cash, please. If you're new to sub-24, or are an old friend, this will be an easy start to the season. Have a look here in case you have any questions, or post a comment below. My post-winter fitness is just about up to the task of bringing a bottle of something warming...

A skiing expedition
Long awaited report, but finally here it is!
You might as well grab a cup of your favourite drink as it is a pretty long one.
Following the known route across Seurasaarenselkä still lit by the late sun, our skiers silently made their way under two bridges to theBaltic sea proper, and after 2 hours anchored in the darkness on the familiar island. To their surprise an igloo of a respecting size was found next to the sauna, where they set their camp for the night. Jumping on the occasion Florian and Andrey took the chance of sleeping in it, well protected from the wind by the high snow walls. A tent would be Jorge and Olivier’s choice of accommodation.
After arrival, camp routines would soon follow: adding layers of clothes (five in my case), setting up tents, lightning outdoor candles, starting the fire in the sauna, collecting buckets of snow to provide for drinking water and löyly, eating, taking sauna.
After a warm night (despite the thermometer dropping to-15°C ), the early sun would wake us all, the stunning light revealing the true beauty of the surroundings. Cold always makes every action slower, but after a warm breakfast and some map checks, all were ready to go. Andrey would go back to Helsinki through Lauttasaasi, while Jorge, Olivier and Florian would continue their journey South-west, towards the island of Skorvö , 30 km away in the municipality of Kirkkonummi .
Spring being on its way, despite the freezing temperatures of the past two weeks, the ice was weakening: direct sunlight on dark spots (new ice not covered with snow, or snow covered with debris such as branches, dirt...) accelerates the melting, and sea currents do their share to diminish the ice sheet layer from under. Sometimes one could hear the sound of the ice breaking, water flowing under the skis and ice sheet oscillating along with the waves. Scary! Great caution needed to be taken to find the suitable path on the ice and avoid places where it would be too weak: sounds and narrow straights particularly.
Pushing south, our skiers would find themselves in late afternoon in an area of packed ice, formed in a corridor of constant winds. At some point the ice became so rough the pulkkas were capsizing every minute, and while the sun was setting, still a few kilometers to the final destination, it was no time for route mistakes. The sun now below the horizon, skis in hand, the three skiers turned to walkers for a while, to ease their progress on the tormented ice.
In the twilight, the last push being made on flat ice on skis, here finally stood the covetedisland of Skorvö . Locating the sauna and the lighted mökki, Olivier would open by mistake the door of the sauna instead of the mökki’s. The man sitting in the sauna, by no means surprised by our sudden break-in in complete darkness, would simply say: “take off your clothes and come in”. It didn’t take long to agree and within a few minutes all were enjoying one of the best saunas, so rewarding after 30 km of skiing dragging a pulkka across the sea of the Gulf of Finland .
Chatting with our guest, we discovered he had made a similarly trip than us that day, following the coast more closely than we did. A warm dinner in the mökki afterwards, it was time for sleep, this time on the terrace under the stars. After a few makkaras for breakfast and making some tea for the road, we would all leave this lovely island, not forgetting to enjoy the view from the island’s hilltop.
Progressing towards Espoonlahti, final destination of the trip, we noticed the tracks of two moose encountered yesterday at dusk, and had lunch next to an old tower (dating back to 1935) at the entrance of the largebay of Espoonlahti .. Few kilometers more on skis and all were in Espoo , the second largest city in Finland , back to civilization.

The 3 remaining skiers, enjoying a perfect spring day, began their jaunt on the sea across sastrugis, studying the features of the ice (old, new, black, packed…), jumping from one island to another in search of signalization marine posts. After a couple of hours skiing, a landing was made on the island of Gåsgrund , part of the Espoo archipelago, served by a regular ferry service on summer. Similarly as Rysäkari last January, the open sea was found on the Southern part of the island, while the Northern shores were still trapped in ice. The lunch break on the island would prove to be really relaxing, on a great spot for a picnic, under the midday sun, with fantastic views!

Overall, a 50 km ski trip of what can be considered so far the best winter trip of Sub24 Helsinki!

Stay tuned for more adventures, most likely on 2 wheels next time.
